Introduction
In the heart of Gujarat, near the Narmada city and adjacent to the isle of Sadhu Bet, stands the remarkable Sardar Vallabhbhai Statue, better known as the Statue of Unity. This breathtaking monolith, standing tall at 182 meters, was inaugurated by India’s esteemed Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, on 31st October 2018, marking Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 143rd birthday. The mammoth project, completed in a swift 46 months, involved the dedication of 3,000 workers and 250 engineers. With its towering presence, it surpasses China’s Spring Temple Buddha by around 30 meters and is double the height of the Statue of Liberty. Built to endure winds of up to 60 meters per second, the Statue of Unity is strategically located, with Vadodara, Surat, and Ahmedabad being the major nearby cities.
The Inspiration Behind the Statue:
Erected to honor Vallabhbhai Patel’s unparalleled contributions, the Statue of Unity is a testament to his role in integrating India post-independence. This monument represents unity, strength, and Patel’s unyielding resolve.
Engineering Brilliance:
The world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity, is a masterpiece crafted by famed Indian artist, Ram V. Sutar. It majestically overlooks the Narmada River from its position on Sadhu Bet Island, enhancing its grandeur.
Fundraising initiatives, like the Run for Unity, supported its construction. Awarded to Larsen and Toubro in 2014, the project’s commencement saw collaboration between Meinhardt Group, Turner Construction, and Michael Graves and Associates. While there were challenges, with opposition from certain local communities, the project materialized, showcasing India’s engineering prowess.
Architectural Grandeur:
A fusion of contemporary and traditional elements, the Statue of Unity depicts Vallabhbhai Patel in his iconic dhoti and shawl. Its polished bronze exterior shimmers, especially during the golden hours, mesmerizing visitors.
A Testament to Nationalism:
Beyond just an architectural marvel, this statue serves as a beacon of national pride, commemorating the sacrifices of freedom fighters. The site has become a pilgrimage for many, rekindling a profound respect for national heroes.
The statue’s construction utilized 130 tonnes of scrap iron, sourced from over 100 million farmers across 169,000 villages in India.
Promoting sustainable transportation, most electric vehicles operating at the Statue of Unity site are driven by local women from Kevadia, demonstrating empowerment initiatives in action.
