Height

The Statue of Unity height is 182 meters nearly 597 feet. The total height of the statue is 240 m with the base height of 58 meters which is nearly 190 feet. The height of 182 meters is kept as the Gujarat state has 182 numbers of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. The Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the world, standing tall at a height of 182 m. It is 23 m taller than the Spring Temple Buddha, China and double the height of Statue of Liberty of USA. The statue of Unity is spread nearly more than 2 hectares and nearly surrounded by a 12 km long artificial lake formed by the Garudeshwar weir downstream on the Narmada river.

Structure

The Statue of Unity will comprise two semi-joined, composite concrete cylindrical cores, surrounded by a structural steel space frame to support the exterior cladding. 5700 Mton of structural steel and reinforcement bars of 18500Mton were used to build the statue. The statue is a three-layered structure. The innermost layer is made of reinforced cement concrete (RCC), comprising two towers 127 meters high that rise until the statue's chest. The second layer is a steel structure and the third an 8 mm bronze cladding on the surface. The RCC towers, which at the bottom form Patel's dhoti-clad legs, have two lifts each. Each lift can carry 26 people to the top in just above half a minute.

Dampers

A tuned mass damper is a device mounted in structures to reduce the amplitude of mechanical vibrations. Their application can prevent discomfort, damage, or outright structural failure. They are frequently used in power transmission, automobiles, and buildings. The statue is built to withstand winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour (110 mph) and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale which is at a depth of 10 km and within a radius of 12 km of the statue. This is aided by the use of two 250-tonne tuned mass dampers which ensure maximum stability. A tuned damper reduces the vibration of a system with a comparatively lightweight component so that the worst-case vibrations are less intense.

Design

The Statue of Unity is designed by Ram V. Sutar after studying various statues of Sardar Patel around the country a team of artists, historians and academics chose to proceed with a design submitted by the Indian Sculptor Ram V Sutar the statue expression, posture and pose justify the dignity, confidence, iron will as well as kindness that his personality exudes. The head is up, a shawl flung from shoulders and hands are on the side as if he is set to walk". Three models of the design measuring 3 feet (0.91 m), 18 feet (5.5 m), and 30 feet (9.1 m) were initially created. Once the design of the largest model was approved, a detailed 3D-scan was produced which formed the basis for the bronze cladding cast in a foundry in China. Patel's dhoti-clad legs and the use of sandals for footwear rendered the design thinner at the base than at the top thereby affecting its stability.

The challenge is not only of the wind blowing against the statue but the succession effect it creates at the back of the statue that had to consider in the structural design. To arrest any sway of such a tall structure, two Tuned Mass Dampers of 250 tonnes each have been used in any given situation, all the four corners of the base raft remain rooted to the ground. The Statue of Unity can also able to survive earthquakes measuring up to 6.5 on the Richter Scale at a depth of 10 km and within a radius of 12 km of the statue.
