GANDHINAGAR: Newly added attractions at the Statue of Unity (SOU) at Kevadiya in Narmada district considerably increased tourist inflow to the site during the Diwali vacation. New facilities like river rafting, cycling, boating, butterfly park and the like have been added recently, a government statement said.
Additional activities like night trekking, wall climbing and two-way zip line have been developed at the Zarwani eco-tourism site. Night tourism is also being promoted for the first time in the country – the main road and all the projects are illuminated at night with colourful and theme-based lighting. A unique “glow garden” with illuminated plants and animals has become a major attraction with over 4,000 people flocking daily to see its beauty.
Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) said in an official statement said that the SoU site has seen a huge inflow of tourists since it was inaugurated on October 31, 2018. A total of 27,17,468 tourists visited Statue of Unity during its first year i.e. from November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2019. The aggregate income generated from the site so far is Rs 80.65 crore.
Until November 10, 2019 the total number of tourists to Kevadiya stands at 29,32,220. Of these, 2,91,640 (about 10%) visited the SoU during the recent Diwali vacation. The average number of tourists to SoU per day during Diwali holidays was 22,434 against 14,918 per day during last year’s Diwali holidays.
If the number of tourists visiting the SoU during this Diwali vacation is compared to the visitors last Diwali, there is an increase of 50.4%, officials said. This is because several new attractions have been added for tourists over the past year.
